How facts are tagged
- Confirmed Reported by several independent outlets, or stated in an official record.
- Documented Comes from one original source, such as a single outlet's investigation. Other outlets may repeat it, but nobody has independently confirmed it yet.
- Claim Comes from an interested party, like a campaign or a company, and hasn't been verified.
How outlets are rated
Lean ratings describe the outlet, not a single article. They draw on published ratings from AllSides, Ad Fontes Media and Media Bias/Fact Check. When those sources disagree, or when we haven't verified an outlet yet, it shows as Unrated rather than a guess. Local outlets are marked Local.

How blindspots are flagged
A story is flagged when outlets on one side of the spectrum cover it and we find no coverage from the other side. The flag says when we checked. If coverage appears later, we add it and update the story.
Headlines and quotes
We show outlets' headlines so you can identify their stories, and link to the full article. Everything else on Unspun is written by us.
